Long Beach Unified School District Completes First Phase of Furniture Reuse Project

[Carlsbad, CA]—October 28, 2022—Furniture Reuse Solutions (FRS), a business specializing in sustainability services, is pleased to announce the successful completion of the first phase of a major project with the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD). The project entails repurposing unneeded surplus K-12 furniture by donating it to charitable organizations in the US and around the world.  Encompassing 85 of LBUSD’s campuses, the project began in June 2022 and will continue through the summer of 2024. During this time, FRS and Crown Worldwide Moving and Storage will transfer furniture from 2,700 classrooms.

The first phase of this project involved sending 5,267 pieces of furniture weighing 50 tons to nonprofit organizations in the US and El Salvador.  Recipients included underserved schools, as well as nonprofit stores that resell furniture to support their humanitarian missions.  The inventory was loaded and transported on six 53’ tractor trailers and three international shipping containers.

“Supply chain issues made logistics challenges particularly acute this past summer,” states Megan Draper, CEO of FRS.  “Yet we managed to achieve a 99% on-time rate for trucking.  Thanks to the detailed project management of LBUSD, along with Crown’s expertise, we were able to complete Phase I successfully for the project owners and charitable recipients”.

“We’re off to a good start,” says Natasha Godoy-Vaca, Move Management Manager at LBUSD Facilities Development and Planning.  “A reuse project on this scale is a first for the district and I’m pleased to report that Phase I was smoothly executed.”

“Crown and FRS proved once again that our partnership provides the most cost-effective and sustainable way to deal with surplus furnishings”, according to Tony Grossman, Sales Executive at Crown. “Strong teamwork makes all the difference in a large project like this.”
