Long Beach Unified School District Launches Reuse Program

[Carlsbad, CA]—May 25, 2022—Furniture Reuse Solutions (FRS), a business specializing in sustainability services, is pleased to announce a major new project with the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD). The project entails repurposing unneeded surplus K-12 furniture by donating it to underserved schools in the US and around the world.  Encompassing 85 of LBUSD’s campuses, the project commences in June 2022 and continues through the summer of 2024.

The scope of the project is huge.  An estimated 200,000 pieces of furniture from over 2,700 classrooms will be placed via FRS’s network of charities and nonprofits.  With this reuse solution, approximately two thousand tons will be diverted from the landfill.  The carbon offset is projected to be on the order of 7,500 MTCO2E, the rough equivalent of conserving 850,000 gallons of gasoline.

In accordance with LBUSD’s sustainability goals, the District Facilities team sought a sustainable disposition solution for the furniture being displaced during the bond construction and refurbishment endeavors.  FRS, in partnership with Crown Worldwide Moving and Storage, proposed a comprehensive solution.  Crown will provide moving and container loading services while FRS will match the inventories with recipients, arrange transportation logistics, and provide on-site management during loading.

With their integrated services, FRS and Crown were able to offer a solution costing less than disposal.  Not only did the District Facilities team come up with a cost-effective plan that minimizes environmental impact, but their reuse strategy also ensures that the furniture will reach its highest purpose by improving the learning experiences of thousands of children for years to come.

“I believe this is one of the largest K-12 projects underway in the US” states Megan Draper, CEO of FRS.  “We are very impressed with LBUSD’s approach to the project.  The entire LBUSD Move Management Team provided us with detailed project timelines, projected inventories, and a well thought out scope of work”.

“Asset disposition can be one of the most challenging aspects of move management,” says Natasha Godoy-Vaca, Move Management Manager at LBUSD Facilities Development and Planning.  “The community and the District do not like to see usable items going to the landfill.  FRS has given us a way to uphold our environmental values while helping other communities improve their educational facilities.”
